Georgia's Electric Cooperatives, supported by Georgia EMC, their statewide trade association, as well as Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Georgia Transmission Corporation, and Georgia System Operations Corporation, play a crucial role in delivering reliable electricity to communities across the state. Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association serving the following organizations:
Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) has more than $16 billion in assets, is one of the nation’s largest power supply cooperatives, and is one of the primary energy producers in Georgia, generating much of the electric power that EMCs deliver to the millions of Georgians they serve. OPC manages and maintains a balanced and diverse portfolio of power-generating assets to provide reliable, long-term capacity for Georgia’s electric co-ops. OPC owns an interest in 36 generating units, including natural gas, hydroelectric, coal, and nuclear-generating plants.
Georgia Transmission Corporation (GTC) is the link between the state’s generating units and electric co-ops, transmitting electricity over high-voltage power lines to EMCs for local distribution to millions of homes and businesses. In order to best serve these needs, GTC invests more than $100 million annually to build, maintain, and secure high-voltage power lines and transmission substations across Georgia.
Georgia System Operations (GSOC) manages and monitors the electrical system, demand, software systems, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure protection for EMCs, OPC, and GTC, ensuring safety and reliability for EMC member-consumers.
Green Power EMC was the first renewable energy provider in Georgia. Formed by Georgia’s electric cooperatives in 2001 due to the growing demand for renewable energy, Green Power EMC negotiates power purchase agreements and partnerships with Georgia-based and national renewable energy resources providers to secure sustainable energy for EMCs including solar, landfill gas, hydro, wood waste, and wind.
